World Book Day prize for Pandora Dewan

Congratulations to Pandora Dewan in 7H - her winning story has been published in a national anthology as part of World Book Day. Her entry won the Evans Schools' Short Story Competition and is one of just 29 stories selected for publication from over 3000 submitted by secondary school pupils around the country.

Visit by Oxford Professor Dr Alan Barr

Dr Alan Barr paid a visit to the Physics Department to give a lecture on everything from the extremely small to the astronomical. Dr Barr is a researcher at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland.

Politics and Economics trip to Strasbourg and Luxembourg Sunday 13th to Friday 18th December 2009

A group of highly enthusiastic students from Years 11-13, four ex-Year 13 students and four students from Cheney School had a great Politics and Economics trip to Strasbourg and Luxembourg. We visited the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, the European Parliament, the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, went on a river cruise and visited the Port of Strasbourg, a gingerbread factory and a jam factory

Drama - Lower School Show - Sweeny Todd

Claims that Sweeney Todd was a real person have been strongly disputed and many scholars believe him to be an early example of urban legend. Todd’s tale became a staple of Victorian melodrama and later became the narrative structure of the Broadway musical by Sondheim. In our 2009 production of Sweeney Todd, written by Miller and Lewton, the girls bravely explored the stylized physicality that the genre of melodramatic acting demands.

Visit to Greece, October 2009

Thirty-one girls set off for Athens straight after Open Evening under the watchful eye of Mrs Bennett, Miss Beslika and Mrs Hook. We were going to visit the ‘golden greats’ of Classical Greece: Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, Epidauros and Corinth. Our hotels were great, especially the one in Tolon near Nauplion: the food was top class, a genuine Greek menu with endless second helpings!

Hadrian's Wall 2009

The week went very well and the devised activities have never worked better. The Classics Department’s beautifully designed work-book guided the girls through the week, giving information and guidance for every subject activity and keeping the girls secure in knowing what came next. The girls were also busy with independent observation, sketching and writing.

Record Number on Roll at Oxford High School

Despite the impact of recession on the national economy, the roll at our school has increased once more. This year nearly 950 are on the roll and we have opened an additional class at Year 7 to accommodate demand. We welcomed 188 new pupils to our school community. We wish them all successful and happy school careers and thank their parents for their confidence in Oxford High School.

Sixth Form History Prizes 2009

It has been a bumper year for sixth form historians in prestigious national History competitions. We were delighted to hear at the end of the summer term that Olivia Elder had been short-listed and commended in the Vellacott History Prize, organised by Peterhouse, Cambridge, for an essay on Stalin. Over the summer holidays, Lucy Parker won first prize in the GDST Dame Kitty Anderson Competition for her A2 coursework on the ‘anarchy’ of Stephen’s reign, and Jessie Anand came second in the Julia Wood History Prize awarded by St Hugh’s College, Oxford, for an essay on the religious reforms of Archbishop William Laud in the 1630s. Many congratulations to all three students: these are very impressive achievements.

Exciting New Additions Enrich Sixth Form Curriculum

From September 2009 we will be introducing two exciting additional qualifications to our Sixth Form curriculum. Alongside the 27 AS and A2 subjects (including Critical Thinking) currently offered in the Sixth Form at OHS, students will be able to take advantage of the Open University’s Young Applicants in Schools and Colleges Scheme (YASS) and a pilot of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
