Opera Project at Oxford High School
It is with great delight that we welcome Opera Project to Oxford High School for a one-off performance of Verdi’s La Traviata on Friday 28th June 2013.
Opera Project is one of the UK’s leading touring opera companies, staging four operas per season accompanied by orchestra. The company has made regular appearances at a wide range of venues including three of the country’s finest opera festivals, presenting exceptional singers from here and abroad. The company is particularly noted for the range and depth of its repertoire, staging operas from the baroque to the twentieth century, including a number of rarely performed one act works.
Prior to their performance of La Traviata, the company will be resident at Oxford High School and students will be involved in a range of master-classes with the singers and artistic director.
Opera Project’s fully staged production of La Traviata, sung in English and accompanied by chamber orchestra, celebrates their 20th year and the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth.
La Traviata is about love and status. Violetta Valery is a courtesan to whom love means nothing. Alfredo Germont is an ardent admirer who argues in favour of romance. Violetta renounces her way of life to set up home with him. They are deeply in love. Unbeknown to Alfredo, his father, Giorgio Germont, intervenes and forces Violetta to give up Alfredo because her past is bringing disrepute to his family. Violetta sacrifices her life of love and contentment, but Alfredo misunderstands her action and behaves badly. As they both alter in stature, the story realises its tragedy. Violetta has tuberculosis and is dying. The remorseful Alfredo is reunited with her, having had her sacrifice explained, but it is too late. She becomes much weaker, and eventually falls dead at Alfredo’s feet. Verdi’s powerful and tuneful score brings strong emotional distinction to this universal theme as we see the relationship of the two main characters develop and ultimately face destruction.
Violetta: Ana James in her role debut. She has made numerous appearances at the Royal Opera House and will be singing Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail in Rio de Janiero in May.
Alfredo: Nicholas Sales. Nicholas has sung twice with Opera Project previously – Ferrando in Così Fan Tutti and Almaviva in Barber.
